Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I've had this TV for about a year now, and there are no problems whatsoever. Picture quality is awesome. HD comes out crystal clear. Before purchasing this TV, I looked at the 6 and 7 series, Sony XBR8, and some plasmas. All had very good picture quality, but not enough to be worth the extra hundreds of dollars. I watch mostly sports, and a lot of people say that the 60 hz isn't optimal for it. I think it's fine. The lag isn't very noticeable unless you compare it side by side.

Sound quality is pretty good considering that they're TV speakers. At factory settings, they were a little mid-y, but it can easily be adjusted through the menu to produce decent sounding speakers. If you want the best sound, you shouldn't be listening through a TV anyway. So for what it is, the sound is pretty good.

Features-wise, the 550 is much more limited than the 750, but I figured I'm not going to do much with the TV besides watching it. I think one neat feature of the 750 is that it can be hooked up through a LAN so that your computers can communicate with your TV. I don't really need that though, so the 550 was perfect for my purposes.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. This is one of Samsung's cheapest, full 1080p TVs out. I recommend it to anyone that's looking for a TV, but is on a budget.

After years of researching and then not buying a HDTV for one reason or another we finally bought the Panasonic G10. VERY happy with it. LCD or Plasma is now really a choice of look rather than which technology caveats are worse, at least IMHO. We bought the TV from Amazon and got a great deal that included delivery and set up. Fantastic. I do have to thank the (surprisingly) very knowledgeable kid at Best Buy that A/B'd the LCD and Plasma sets for us in the Magnolia Theatre room. We really saw the difference in picture there with the same Blu-Ray program going to both screens. We liked the Plasma "look" hands-down. But I realize this is a very subjective thing that you need to judge for yourself. This plasma screen is also barely warm, which was a factor in being ok with the plasma. Anyway, the TV is great. Lots of options. I have the TV and the Blu-Ray player (You absolutely MUST get a Blu-Ray player) connected to the internet. The Blu-Ray BD-Live thing is so far, a wet firecraker but using the internet connected to the TV and able to access Amazon Video-On-Demand (VOD) is really great. AND, since I purchased the TV from Amazon I got a 0 credit to try out the service. I can get some great movies without even using my Comcast service which I really like because well, I;m NOT a fan of Comcast. The service itself is good but their customer service is a pathetic joke and if they had any real competition in our area they would go out of business. The customer service people are all nice but they can't seem to do ANYTHING to solve any problem. But they are nice as they can't help you, I'll give them that. But I seriously digress, the TV is great, the price was great, the delivery and setup were great. I would recommend this TV to anyone that likes the more cinematic (IMHO) look of a plasma set. I also recommend the experience of buying a large ticket item like this through Amazon. I was a little concerned about doing that but I am glad I took the "chance". And I am now a bit of an HD snob. My friends told me this would happen but I thought they were a little silly. Turns out they were correct. Once you get used to HD, it's hard to return to SD (Standard Definition). Be prepared if you haven't had HD before.

This TV is nice, and has great bang for your buck. It offers 120Hz support and displays picture that is ever so clear on Blu-Ray movies. It is almost like looking through a window. The pictures are so clear and crisp that you could see hairs on female's faces that you would otherwise not see on a regular tube based TV and that the actress would not want you to see. You can see male's pours on their face and every cracks on a dog's nose. The 120Hz displays movies at a very smooth motion. The TX-42F450S has a contrast ratio of 6000:1 and a response time of 6.5 ms which is an improvement compared to the 1000:1 contrast ratio and 8 ms response time of most of Westinghouse's previous TX series TVs. It is equipped with an ATSC, NTSC, CATV, and Clear QAM TV tuner in addition to a range of inputs including HDMI, Component, Composite, VGA, and SPDIF

I picked this out of a lineup of TVs as having the second best picture. I didn't focus on brand names at all. The Samsung took first place, of course--but was 0 more.

I googled this TV while in the store and reviewed the specs on Amazon.com. The more I've read and learned about this TV the more anxious I got to buy it.

I've had it less than a day, but wow! It's been awesome on the SD Wii and HD (upscaled) Transformers as well as 1080i from DirecTV. It has features I never new were features even after two years of reading and studying.

One important thing to note, the contrast ratio is misreported on the web. It's actually 2,000:1.

Also, Amazon reports that it is a 120hz unit...but I could not find that evidenced anywhere else. If this unit isn't...it's still a steal. If it is 120hz, this unit is highway robbery.

Either way, I'm thrilled.

Since this TV only has 2 reviews, I decided to write my own.

PROS:

-1080p looks great - I'm using this for my Xbox 360 and my games look amazing. Blacks are black and the colors are good.
-No stuck or bright pixels, but one half-broken pixel(does not display red) This took me a week to even notice and I really had to look closely
-Plenty of connections in the back
-Low price - the next cheapest 32" 1080p is at least 40 bucks more, and a brand-name one will set you back at least 250 more.
-Shiny (could be a con for some people that touch their tv alot)
-Comes with an accessory bag (For the power cable and remote, haha)
-Built in speakers are pretty good for a LCD.
-Accepts 1080p over component
-Power LED is dim and green, off is dim red. I hate those bright blue ones - they're annoying, especially at night.

CONS:

-Menu is too simple - Theres only the basic calibrations for this tv (brightness, contrast, color) and no fancy settings. This is the biggest con for me.
-Remote is a little cheap - but that doesn't matter, right?
-Infrared sensor on the tv kind of sucks. Have to point the remote directly at the tv without any sort of obstructions.
-No video cables included - Not sure if other TV's come with at least composite, but go do yourself a favor and get a HDMI or component cable if you don't have one already.
-You might have to squeeze if you have 3 HDMI cables plugged in - they're a bit close.

OTHER:

I'm not able to comment on the channel surfing on this set as I use a cable box to watch TV. However, it does state that there are ATSC and QAM tuners built in. Also this is my first real HDTV (other than a computer monitor) so I can't comment on common problems and if they are in this set or not. They included some sort of accessory bag, but it only had the remote, the power cable, and some sort of plastic cover that I don't know what it goes to (possibly if you take the stand off to mount it?). For the price you pay, you can't get any better. If you're looking for a 32" 1080p, don't care about the brand, and have money constraints, this is the tv to get. If you're looking for a brand name tv or one with all sorts of image calibrations and settings, you should look elsewhere.

I have owned the Vizio V550M TV for about 3 months now, and I must say that it (so far) is the BEST television I have ever owned. I used to be a Sony fan, but no more since HD wide screens started. The first 50" I bought was a Sony KDF Grand Wega series. It went "kaput" in 2 years. Sony replaced the insides after many phone calls, and THAT lasted another 1-1/2 years. I paid ,500 for that set and it is now sitting at the junk yard. No more Sony's for me. Vizio is an excellent set, and you can get it MUCH cheaper than the prices that are listed here on Amazon. (Sorry about that Amazon. I like you and have bought a LOT of things from your site, but you can buy the Vizio sets much cheaper than what you have listed here for them.) I didn't rate the sound quality because I have a separate surround system. The video inputs are amazing! And so many of them!

i was scoping the market for like a year. constantly going back and forth between lcd and plasma, my neighbor had the 40" 120hz lcd by samsung and it got me into the idea of creating a home theater. so anyways i went to best buy and saw this tv in person and was amazed with the picture. the colors are way more vibrant than lcd. the whites are clearly more dull, however when looking at faces between lcd and plasma the bright white washes out the face/ skin color. but... when i watched movies at my neighbors house they seemed clearer, this is because of the smaller screen.... what im saying is he has the first gen ps3 60gb, i ordered the ps3 slim 250 gb, so in theory same stuff. But on his smaller screen the regular upconverstion of a dvd seemed better. i now am disapointed with my movies that arent blue ray:( but hey.... blue ray is the new standard and when u deal with great technology it quickly becomes the norm, now i am purchasing everything blue ray....... video gaming on the ps3/ samsung is RAD. game mode, dynamic contrast. assassins creed 2 is perfect. im waiting on pleanty of games and movies to come from a separate order from amazon. im saving so that in the next four months im gunna drop bout 2,400 on the sound system. polk rti12's as the mains, rti4's as the back and sides, and a bic 475 watt 12" sub, and the center being polk csi3,completed by a yamaha 7.1 amp. this will be the best thing ever!!! im anticipating growing roots for i will never leave the room. its already bad.....having spent like 12 hours in a row in front of this screen. so yeah essetially i did my reseach and decided with a ps3, i dont need the widgets, and the contrast ratio and 600 hz wasnt being surpased in the higher models. this plasma was better than any lcd even 400 more than i paid. so i am stoked and know that i have the best stuff money can buy. beyond that the money i saved makes me spend more on the rest. games and the eventual sound system in 4 months to come. I use the AmazonBasics Toslink Digital Audio Optical Cable to connect my sound card on my computer to my 5.1 Surround Sound Logitech Speakers. The 6 feet cable provides more than enough reach between the optical socket on my sound card and the optical socket on the control console for my speakers.

As opposed to conventional speaker wiring, optical cables (AKA Toslink cables) prevent the degradation of audio signals from the source to the speakers. The speakers will thus be able to produce sound that is free from distortion. Sweetness!

Previous reviewers have stated that these cables are a rip off. This is not true, or at least it is not so black and white like the reviewer implies. I am an electronics engineer and I am very well versed in many communications technologies. I can state that it does matter what kind of cable you use depending on the application. Many folks can get by with the lesser quality cable simply because their application can function with acceptable results and they cant tell the difference. Take TV application for example. Sometimes with the TV itself you cant perceive a difference due to the environment it is in. Sometimes the TV or other HD device may auto regulate the data speed depending on what it detects can be achieved. You may be watching a 720p image but connected to what you think is 1080p. With modern players it is sometimes difficult to tell due to the greatly improved upconversion capabilities. Sometimes people just dont know the difference and sometimes it actually works as expected, even with a lower quality cable.
The materials the cable is made from does make a very large difference in transmission quality over distance. The reason for gold connections is that gold is known to conduct electicity better than other materials. If you begin to degrade the quality of the data at the source because of a poor connection then the end data quality will be reduced even more due to the length of the cable being used. The longer the cable, the better its construction and quality must be to insure proper data transfer. Again, with short cables you may get away with it and not see any difference.
This becomes very apparent when your dealing with different technologies especially high speed data tranmissions. If you see digital pixelation or dropout from time to time on an HD image, I would be willing to bet it is due to using a poorly connected or poorly designed cable. What you have to consider is the bandwidth of your data application. Old DVD standards can use low speed cables because the data throughput is less than 1G to produce a 480p image. Later DVD standards increased this data requirement for receiving a 720p image. Modern standards for blue ray at 1080p are considerably higher. If you use a cable designed either by specification or quality for 480p or 720p connected to a 1080p source, then you can expect that the data transmission may be compromised and the end quality will suffer. Because it states it is 1.3 complient doesnt mean it will work flawlessly in your particular environment or set up. It is a gamble to use a cheaper cable. It may work just fine for one guy, but fail to perform for the next.
The bottom line is if you demand the best and require high speed data transmission, then these cables are sure to deliver what you expect.
It comes down to a simple decision, do I want to take my chances with something lesser or do I want to guarentee that my selection will work and deliver the best possibly quality for my HD viewing pleasure. The age old rule of thumb still applies, you get what you pay for. For my money, i would prefer to insure that it will work to the very best of the capabilities of my equipment. After all, I spent a large amount of cash on an HD TV and blue ray player, why skimp on the quality of the connections.

I bought this SONY Bravia 1080p LCD 46 inch HD TV, model KDL-46S4100 on a Wednesday from the Home Theater Store for under ,200 with free shipping. I received the TV the following week on a Friday from FedEx. The FedEx driver even helped me carry the TV downstairs to the family room. Like the other reviewer stated, it was a snap to install and took minutes to set up. The menu asks that you wait 50 minutes until all the analog and high definition channels are tuned in. So I did and the navigation of the SONY remote was great. Easy to find your channels, especially the HD ones. The picture in HD is unsurpassed. I have not seen a better high def picture in any other TV. Although everthing on this LCD TV is simple to use there is a ton of stuff programmed into the set. It even tells you with a short menu on top of the screen when you change channels what resolution the channel is broadcasting. If it is in 1080i with a wide screen 16:9 ratio then it tells you. Some of the HD channels are only broadcasting in 780 and the analog ones in 480. So you know why the picture is clearer and crisper than others. I can't wait til they all go high definition in June. Some folks complained about ordering from the Home Theater Store but I was very pleased with them. They emailed once the item shipped and it arrived just as predicted. Shipment was fast and the box was not damaged in any way. I highly recommend this TV and had no problems from the Home Theater Store. Now I know why they are always comparing other TV's to SONY.

I normally write rather long, detailed reviews of electronics, but in this case, I'll be brief. As of October 2008, you will NOT find a better picture on any LCD or Plasma TV anywhere. "But what about that Samsung I saw at Best Buy?" -- This is better. "But what about that Sony I saw at Circuit City?" -- This is better. The blacks are solid. The reds pop off the screen like you won't believe. Buy this TV, don't look back, and you'll be as happy as you can be. I can't imagine that any 1080p TV will ever look significantly better than this.

As for mounts, if you want an articulated mount, the TV is balanced in such a way that a slightly over-engineered mount is a good investment to keep it stable. The Peerless PLAV70 with the PLP-NEC61 adapter plate is perfect. The SA760P mount is also great if you don't need to extend the TV as far but you want top-notch cable management. It also needs the PLP-NEC61 adapter plate.

I purchased this set on sale at Sears and they even price matched it to the price that CompUSA was selling it at. I got a great deal on it. I took it home hooked it all up and ran into trouble right away with my HD Cable box. I live in the Tampa, Florida area and have Brighthouse networks cable. They use a Scientific Atlanta Exploreer 8300HDC HD DVR box. I could operate the cable box with the cable company remote with no problem. As soon as I would turn on the Toshiba LCD, the remote would no longer work. Turn the TV off and the remote worked just fine. I went through 3 different cable boxes with Brighthouse networks. I then had a Sears repair tech come out to check the TV and make sure nothing was wrong with it. Upon inspection he decided to call Toshiba directly and see what was going on. Toshiba admitted to having a problem with this model of cable box and they did not know what was causing the interference at this time. Their recommendation was to check with Brighthouse to see if they had a different brand of cable box. If they did not, then they (Toshiba) recommended returning the TV for a brand other than Toshiba.

So Brighthouse did not have a different brand which led to me returning the TV. I did this with great hesitation as the Toshiba had an excellent picture and sound. I really loved the TV and the features it had. I just wish it would have worked with my cable box.

I returned the TV with no problem and purchased a Sharp Aquos LC-46D65U. I set that TV up with no problem and there are no interference issues.

So like I said in the title, awesome TV but can be deadly to your cable box.

This is a great small device that does exactly what it is supposed to do, split a HD signal without loss in quality and/or strength. I highly recommend this splitter.
Here is my situation:
I bought a second TV (Samsung 32", 1080P, 120hz) for my exercise room in the basement. The problem was I have one Dish HD receiver in my leaving room (the leaving room TV is Samsung 40", 1080P, 120hz). I used 25ft HD cable to connect my second TV, but did not want to connect and reconnect cables every time when I need to watch TV in the basement. This splitter solved my problem. Now, I can watch one TV in either room or both TV simultaneously. I have not noticed any loss in the signal quality.

I've had this TV around 2 months now and have been very satisfied. I have the following devices hooked up to the TV:

Motorola HD-PVR for cable
Magnavox Blu-ray Player
Wii game system

I may eventually run a cable to my PC as well for steaming video. The video quality is really good, especially at the 1080i/p range. SD looks pretty good and standard TV signals aren't bad but noticeably inferior to HD or SD. This is just something you have to tolerate in this price range as the TVs with really good native HD upconversion are still pretty expensive.

The only negatives that I've really found are:

1. The built-in speakers are pretty cheap sounding but would probably be adequate for a small room. This is a non-issue for me since everything goes through my surround receiver anyway. My TV's volume is always set at "0" even before this TV.

2. There is noticeable light in the corners which is obvious when you have the lights turned down and the corners are showing black - such as watching a movie with a high aspect ratio. Not a deal-breaker by any means but just a minor irritation for me.

3. Not really a fault of the TV (more of a compatibility issue with a third party remote), but when using a Harmony remote, only a few of the direct input buttons work. The TV's remote uses multiple "input" button presses to change the input. The Harmony database for this TV came up with direct input buttons so it doesn't have to scroll but only three of them work. These are (1) set of standard RCA inputs and (2) HDMI inputs. This worked out fine for me because my PVR and Blu-ray are hooked up through HDMI and my Wii is using the RCA inputs (I had to scrap my component Wii cable in the name of simplicity). Of course I could upgrade my surround receiver but it's not worth all that ;-)

The first two issues are why I give the set only four stars instead of five. Like I said, the third issue is more of an issue with the remote and the fact that the Harmony still gives more functionality than the original remote kind of nullifies this complaint.

Overall, for the money, this is a great TV and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

I've owned this TV for about a year now and wanted to share my experience. I have or had it hooked up to the following components:

Xbox 360 (via component)
Yamaha 5.1 receiver(HDMI)
Roku Netflix Box(HDMI)
Comcast HD DVR Box(HDMI)
Toshiba HD-DVD Player(HDMI)
Dell Home Theater PC(VGA)

It has worked flawlessly with all these components except the Netflix ROKU box, which there seems to be conflict with the HDCP technology and causes an intermittent green screen to appear. Its really more of an annoyance than anything and I've not spent much time troubleshooting it.

When I bought this TV, I was comparing it to the well rated Samsung and Sony models but ended going with this model after comparing them side by side at my local A/V store. The biggest selling points for me were the viewing angle and color vibrancy. A year later, I'm not disappointed with my decision and am still very happy with the vibrancy and viewing angle.

Several months ago, I dropped my cable service and decided to get my content via a HD antenna, Roku Box and my Home Theater PC(Hulu, YouTube, Amazon, ect). I wasn't sure what to expect when I made this change, but have been happy with the selection and especially the video quality through the HD antenna. The built in tuner is very easy to use and once setup it's a no-brainer. I don't know if I'll ever switch back to cable.

Overall, I'm very happy with this TV>

I did a lot of research before purchasing this set. I required a large tv between 60 and 65 inches for the space and room I was putting it in. After reading many of the reviews and specs for this set I decided to purchase it from Amazon.

Delivery went well. Despite some things I read regarding the shipping company amazon uses to ship these monsters we experienced no issues. The set was delivered and brought into our house and setup. The gentleman made sure the set got a picture before he left so we had a chance to fully inspect it before we signed off.

The picture on the set is amazing. I did not make any adjustments on it and it looks great. We did not hear any buzzing noise that some complain about. The set is quiet.

One concern I did have was that there are windows in the room I was putting it in. I read about the screen filter that Samsung applies to this set. Despite the filter there is still a good deal of reflectivity of light on the screen. If you have a bright room with lots of lights or windows and watch during the day this might not be the best set. The glare is pronounced. Fortunately for us we typically watch this particular set in the evening. The plasma looks best when the lights are completely out in the room at night. That said you can have normal lighting and the picture is still great. Just beware of window rooms during the day if the viewing angle puts a bright window between your eyes and the screens reflection.

Overall I am very happy with this Samsung 63 plasma set. The only con as noted above is the bright room with windows.

I bought this mount based on the positive reviews that were on here. I'm glad I listened to everybody reviewing this mount! This is a great mount, that fit perfectly on my 32" Vizio. It comes will all the necessary bolts/washers you need for various wall types and various TVs. the included instructions are straightforward and easy to understand. It took me about 30 minutes to install the mount on the wall and the brackets on the t.v.

The wall mount is about 20 to 21 inches wide, so IT WILL fit between two standard 16" wide wall studs...The mount i received has a nice black finish and it is heavy duty.

Also, there is about a 2 1/2 inch leeway to the sides. For example, I moved my Vizio all the way to the left side of the mount as far as it can go. Once in that position, I can move the t.v. 2 1/2 inches to the right. So, if you were to center the t.v. on the mount, you would have about an 1" or 1 1/4 inches to move each side. This was perfect for me, because i didnt want to see so the mount sticking out behind my t.v. Also, the tilt on this is easy to use and works well.

YOU cannot tell the difference between this mount and a 0/150 mount!! I know this because my brother bought a 5 mount for his Vizio, and they look the same!! I'm definitely glad i went with this product.

I also took one of the reviewers advice and purchased it through ERSE, who is listed under the MORE BUYING CHOICES. After shipping, i paid .00 total!!!! And ERSE shipped out the next day, so i got my mount fairly quickly!!!

First, for the price it's an excellent choice. I bought mine from newegg.com for 9.00 it has since went back up to 299.00. The review, the speakers sound tinney, it came with a dead pixel. I'm still trying to get it replaced but it may have to go to the manufacture. I'm using mine for a 2nd monitor on my desktop and for a ps3 gaming monitor the HDMI inputs even support audio which is as it should be. Works great except for the dead pixel. Even with the dead pixel I'd still give it 4/5 stars for the price.

This TV is awesome! It has an excellent picture (although I did upgrade to HD after I bought it). Why have such a beautiful TV in SD anyway? The picture in SD was not bad, although any text on the screen did appear a little fuzzy. The graphics look awesome on the XBOX, PS3 and even the Wii.

Setup is a breeze. The TV recognizes anything you plug into it immediately and switching from one device to another is easy.

When I bought mine, I also purchased a 5 year protection plan. From what I have heard and read, the warrenty from Mitsubishi is not that great and reguires you to ship the TV to them if anything goes wrong. I sure would hate to try to box up something this size, so I opted for a plan where if anything goes wrong, they will come to me and fix it. Furthermore, I get all the lamp replacements I need during the 5 years for free (lamps last from 6 months to 2 years). Two lamp replacements alone will pay for my warrenty.

One thing that I was told about the DLP's is you have to be careful when powering on and off. I was told that once the TV is turned off the lamp will need about 15 minutes to cool before it can be powered on safely. Powering on too quickly will shorten the lamp life.

I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase, but I would definately recommend getting a better warranty with bulb replacement. The only thing better than watching this TV is knowing that if anything goes wrong in the next five years, it will get taken care of.

In fact, after 2 weeks of owning this model we bought one in the 60" size for our den!

This tv is the best at it's PRICE range for a 52" lcd tv. At this price range you want to consider this tv and a sony z series. I will elaborate on the reason why in this review. It's got a great picture but it's not as sharp as the sony z series which costs the same amount for a smaller 46" generally. The toshiba does have a slightly better picture than the new sony 52" w series of the same size which is around the same price. However the toshiba does support deep color and 5:5 pulldown which is the same thing as 24 p or film speed or 24 frames per second. this is a important new technology that samsung forgot to include on their new lcd series. Many blu ray players output blu rays at 24p if your tv can take the signal. When this happens the movie looks like it did in the movie theater with smooth motion. The same sized sony w series does this also but isn't as sharp picture wise as this tv but and it lacks deep color which this tv has. Anyways if you have a blu ray player or ps3 you want a tv that can intake 24p or 5:5 pulldown. (these are the same thing). the toshiba does this and gives you deep color and the w series of sony of the same size just gives you 24p. You get more picture size for a little more money with this toshiba than the z series. But you don't get x.v. color which helps expand the color. the sony z series and above do this function.
the new sony xbr6 will have 24p, deep color, and x.v. color too and will be the same size as this tv but will run you alot more. Of course you DON'T want any lcd that can't do 120hz and most NEW lcd tv's do that. At this price range for this size of tv , toshiba is the best bet. If you want a sharper picture though you will have to drop down to the z series which is only a 46" or xbr5 which is more expensive. Why am I going on about x.v. color , deep color, and 24p (5:5 pulldown)?, because these are the standards that will carry us into the far future. deep color and x.v. color allow the tv to accept more color and show more color. if they offer tv's with greater than 1080p this is LESS important because nothing will be set to output at that anyway. so it's not that important. but having a lcd tv that can do 120 hz, is a good thing, greater hz(240) lcds will come in the next few years probably, but you will have a good enough tv to be satisfied with a 120 hz tv.
for many , many , years to come. and this tv is good enough to be happy with for at least five years conservatively. It has the 24p (5:5 pulldown)amd deep color and a large screen. It doesn't have the x.v. color but to get it at this price you must find a smaller z series from sony. Many representitives at stores have not been informed on these new standards , which you will want far into the future. But if you have blu ray you NEED a tv that does 24p (5:5 pulldown). why spend money on a LARGER 42' and above lcd without this feature? So it comes down to it at this price range, a smaller z series with all the new standards or this great tv with two of the new standards. But whatever you get you want the 24p standard. this has it, sadly the samsung lcd ranges and many others don't. If you can't live without a 52 inch then this a good buy also. but if you want the best picture (at this price range) out there right now you would go with a z series. These are the new 2008 models of course that this review has been comparing. This is a long review but few salesmen are telling their customers about the new standards at all. And you do get two of them on this tv so that makes this a better buy than alot of other tv's at this price. At this price range I would suggest you look at this in a showroom, the picture quality is great , the z series is clearer though but smaller for the same price range. So far the models on showrooms here show no defects or purple blotches. Some lcds get those defects in early runs. So that is more good news. All in all , this is a fine tv with a great picture and good blacks, it has a good processor too so it is a better buy than the sony w series of the same size. And it's not as great a tv as the sony z series but it is bigger. Many go for the samsungs at this size but they shortchanged their customers by leaving off 24p film speed and deep color. So skip them and think toshiba or sony lcd and then compare.

I know, you look at the price and say how could they be for real? These cables are legit.

High priced A/V cables are one of the most common scams today. Do a little research and you'll find that no name brand cables such as these are just as good as those 0 and up ones you see at the stores. So why do the stores do it? Because they know that many people are new to hi def and home theater and just don't know any better. There are also some who will stubbornly stick by a brand (Monster for example) just for bragging rights. But at the end of the day, it's just all the same thing and I'm glad there are companies like these out there that aren't looking to put one over on us or gouge us for as much as they can. Just provide what we need for a great price.

I have 4 of these HDMI cables and they've done nothing but allow my equipment to provide the picture and sound I'm looking for from my hi def t.v.'s, receivers, and game system. I can't recommend them enough to anyone, anywhere. Don't be fooled by the stores and the sales people paid to convince you, you need to pay hundreds for cables. You don't and there's no reason to ever again!

I reviewed TVs for some time and ended up with this model after much reading and comparing of different models. My critera were picture quality, size, cost and brand in that order. I did not want to spend over K, but wanted a TV in the 50" to 60" size with a great quality picture. Brand was only imprtant that it be a name brand, but did not care which one. I did not care if the TV was Plasma, LCD or LED.

I had a hard time deciding between this model and the Panosonic G10 50" plasma (G10 was less $ but picture quality was lower in my opinion but not by much. If cost is a primary driver then I would go with the G10 and save the dollars. My reasoning rulled out LEDs that are to bleading edge from a cost standpoint, 240 hz was the same and I could see no differnece in quality, and from what I could see neither had a better picture at all but just cost more. I did not need the thin panel an LCD provides I know in the near future they will be the standard, but too much price difference today. This Samsung has the best picture of any TV in the store bottom line, looking at them all side by side this model always had the best picture by a wide margin. That includes the LED, 240 hz models and even ones that cost 2x as much or more.

Since getting it home the only coments we have had is the picture is too good - "I did not know that actor had a small scar". We have not gone out to a movie since getting it, why would we when we have a better picture at home. Two of our friends left our house asking for the model number so they could replace thier TV - it really is that good. My son thought the picture was so good he felt the actor was going to walk out the side of the TV when they walked off camera.

If you are looking for an excellent picture in a 50" plus size at a reasonable price this TV is perfect.

PROS Picture Quality, Size, Internet (use it to watch NetFlix movies), Automatic detection of components, Very Large Viewing Angle

CONS Sound just ok (plan on surround sound), Reflections (has a much more shiny face than my other LCD TVs, think about where you will put this model and if that is a problem look for another model)

Picture quality and color quality is fantastic. This is our first LCD flat screen TV. We had a 28 inch CRT for 20+ years... We are still blown away with the colors. We initially planned on a 40-42 inch, now that we have the 46 we are not disappointed, ..50?55?..hmmm No more room actually on our new TV console.

Sound quality leaves a bit to be desired. The speakers are just to small to have any quality sound. We have a stereo system that we may have to incorporate with the TV watching.

The one feature I was initially disappointed with was the lack of USB port recognition with a flash drive. Sony claims not all USB devices will work and recommends the SONY Micro Vault Flash drive to be compatible. Well after doing some web searching I did find some helpful info on the Sony eSupport page. After learning the USB device must be FAT32 formatted I now can upload photographs (.jpg files) from even the least expensive flash drive. I just re-formatted a SanDisk 250MB flashdrive and then a "micro center" 2GB flash drive I got for free!. After re-formatting to FAT32 the SONY recognizes the drive and I can now view my collection of digital photos. I must add that when viewing good quality .jpg's (2-3meg size) the SONY displays the pics as sharp as a tack!!..the shots look the best I've ever seen. The colors are so real looking you feel as though you could touch the object as in real life. Now I can pursue getting my 1000+ 35mm slides from Germany and England while in the service (40 years ago!) converted to .jpg files. What better way to show all the slides as compared to to old slide projector/screen method...so archaic!

I did learn as well at the eSupport Site there is a software update available for the set. I'll be contacting Sony soon to verify if our set needs the update as we just purchased the TV 2 weeks ago.

Tip: Get the Support Belt Kit, Part #X21866021, to secure it to your console. You don't want this massive set to inadvertently topple over. Would recommend this set...the Sony's all outperformed other LCD's we looked at as far as color quality. At least that was my wife's opinion..she has a better eye for color I have to admit. I have had the Panasonic TH-50PZ850U for about 6 months. I spent about 00 with extended warranty. So far, I have been impressed. The resolution was top notch. I used "Finding Nemo" to test the colors. On the vivid setting it was fantastic... Probably a bit exaggerated. The Studio ref mode offers more accurate colors. The THX settings on the 800U may be more accurate, but I would love to have a little bit of oomph to the colors even if it is not accurate. Don't we all like "exaggerated fake ones"!
Clearly this TV is a winner. It comes close to the blacks in a pioneer and the THX accuracy of the 800U. It matches the Brilliant colors of a Samsung or probably even better. It has improved energy savings, better anti glare screen, wider viewing angle, and a web interface via viera cast. I am going to set up the viera cast soon. I cannot find another TV that packs more.
The speakers are great. I moved to a smaller home and had to keep the surround speakers in storage, but I don't feel the need for them.
It is easy to assemble and set up. You won't need a professional. I bought an upconverting DVD player to watch all my old DVDs and the difference is obvious. I am yet to watch Blu-ray movies. I am waiting for a good blu ray player that can also play movies stored on an external hard drive through a USB connection.
Like others have mentioned, the only bug - if a player is connected through a HDMI port it will switch out another that is connected via component cables.

The picture and the sound are so good I'll give it 5 stars. Once you watch a Blu Ray movie on this TV everything else is going to look inferior - I've never seen a better TV on the market, though I guess they've started making slimmer, LED TVs for like a million dollars.

We decided to go HD after a long time of waiting. We, for a very long time, used a Toshiba Rear-projection TV at 50" in our living room. We decided that we would need a TV large enough to take the place of that TV and to make it not look so small. DLP is the right choice for this since you can get a much larger screen size at a lower cost than LCD or Plasma. Since we had good luck with our other rear-projection, we figured that we would have good luck with this TV. Having it for a month now, there have been no issues and our view experience is great. The matted screen makes glares much less harsh (our old TV had a glossy screen). The wight of this TV is extremely light for its size, our friend has a 42" LCD which is much heavier than this. As long as you're planning to put the TV on a stand, the lack of it being a flat panel shouldn't be a big deal. 1080p content through our Xbox 360 is very detailed and sharp and the TV never lags behind nor have I seen any "rainbow effect" from this TV during normal viewing. The only con with this TV is the build in speakers to the TV are very tinny and all around subpar. Although if you use this TV hooked up to an AV receiver you will have no issues, you buy a TV for the picture, not the sound. All around I am very happy we bought this TV. I've had nothing but good luck with Mitsubishi, in fact, we still own an old Mitsubishi console color TV from the early 80s that works perfectly. You should have no regrets in buying this DLP HDTV.

I could understand using monster cables for analog audio and video since the longer the cable the more resistance and more loss you have. However, it never made any sense for digital such as DVI or HDMI. Either you'll get the signal or you won't. If you get errors you'll also see those. This cable works great. This tv has the best picture on any hdtv I have ever seen other than a pioneer kuro elite. However my plasma tv had a gap of a fourth of inch where there was no plasma gas. It was a faulty one. Perhaps it had been laid down on it's side? Anyways I returned it, but later decided to try this model again. And this one was perfect. Many people are saying that this is the same as g10 in quality , they are not correct , the v10 has a much better picture and processor. The colors are crisper and the fans are much more quiet than on a g10. The g10's fans are barely noticable but I couldn't even hear them on this model. The v10 also does 96hz which allows you to play blu rays at proper 24p speed. The g10 will only do it at 60hz and 48hz which isn't as smooth for blu ray playing. The v10 also looks better although I am not a fan of the one plane of glass in the front; it is still a sharp set and this tv is has the best picture for a newer Tv, other than the pioneer elit series which is now extinct. this is surely a better tv by far than the g10. the next model up from this one seemed very similiar but much more expensive than this one. the z1, It is also silver in color (the g10 and v10 are black) so for that reason alone, I might have skipped it. I don't recommend using a plasma tv for video game usage at all. I use a lcd for that purpose and leave movies and tv usage for this exceptional tv.

After about a year and a half of research I bought this TV off of Amazon. I had seen it in a store before I purchased it, and in the store it blew the other TVs around it away.

Having used this TV for about 2 weeks, I can safely say that it has in many ways lived up to my expectation. The color is true to life, the contrast excellent. Motion is seemless, and watching blue-ray movies on the TV is exquisite, and this is with out of the box settings! I have also played many hours of video games on this TV, and the image is mind blowing. My wife was astounded the first time I booted up our Xbox 360, saying "I'll never play video games on your computer again!" - Not sure if I am happy or sad about that one... Even for action games and FPS's this TV has had seemless visuals with no bluring, slowdown, or anything else I've heard negative about LCD/LED TV's. Many people complain that LEDs tend to have a washed out white "halo" around the outer rim of their TV, due to the way that the LED "side-lights" the display (in contrast to the "back-light" of an LCD TV. I use this TV in my basement with no other lighting, this is the worst possible scenario for these issues, and I almost never notice a problem. The only time I do notice this is if the lights are off and the screen is pure black (credits to a movie). Otherwise I can't say I notice this AT ALL.

My complaints about the devices are these:

1) It isn't true 120hz
2) Isn't best bang for the buck

This TV claims to be 120hz, but is really 60hz with "auto-motion plus," a feature that digitally inserts extra frames based on some sort of average of the current and next frame. This creates an artificial 120hz. I've found this system to be great for high quality images, as it gives me a fluid and realistic feel, which is almost creepy. On the other hand, this technology doesn't always do the images favors, and I've found when this technology is applied to standard definition video the effect is less then desirable. It is almost as if the feature accents problems with the image, making poor lighting and non-fluid movement obvious. That said, you can turn the feature off, but its burried in a complex menu system, and is a pain to toggle. I bought this TV thinking it was true 120hz, but I was wrong. Still, even with true-motion turned off action scenes are without skip, and look great.

My last and final complaint is that for the price this TV is quite as nice as I would have hoped. If it were a true 120hz this TV would be a 5 star purchase, but what you are really paying for is the LED factor, and not for the other features. All in all the interface, remote, and construction is top notch. Performance is admirable, but the TV is expensive, and I've seen LCD tvs for hundreds less that can compete with this TV in most departments.

A definite buy if you must have an LED TV. If you can go with LCD I'd consider buying something else.

I actually own the sister version of this product (the Sharp LC-52E77U), but the information in this review is equally applicable to this TV since they use the same, albeit smaller, panel.

Since I have owned this TV for a few months now, I thought it would be helpful to share a few tips and tricks I have learned:

PROBLEM: INCOMPATIBLE AUDIO SIGNAL

All my A/V devices (360, PS3, Wii, Samsung DTB-H260F) were connected to my Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver with HDMI, which was set to output to my Sharp Aquos LC-52E77U. And, although the receiver was set to "Audio TV Out" off (and even with it on), the TV kept popping up this error:

"Incompatible audio signal has been received, please check the output signal."

It only pops up for a few seconds, and only when I would switch devices or resolution or whatever. Still, pretty annoying. Connecting the devices directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error - the only time it didn't happen is when there was 2ch 44.1/48Khz PCM involved.

Unfortunately, unlike every other TV I have ever owned, the Sharp doesn't have a menu option to disable audio. Muting didn't help, either.

The solution? Set the audio volume to 0. No more error!

PROBLEM: NO DEVICE DETECTED (DVI -> HDMI)

When I first got this TV, I plugged in my Mac Mini, using a DVI -> HDMI cable. After using it for a bit, the TV would stop recognizing that the Mac Mini was connected. It turns out that, whenever the Mac Mini would be rebooted or would go to sleep, the Sharp would refuse to recognize that it was connected anymore.

The solution? Physically unplugging and plugging in the TV (not just pressing the power button), and disabling sleep on the Mac. I still have to do this unplugging dance occasionally - like for system updates - but not as often as when sleep was enabled. I guess that's the price you pay for a beautiful 1080p HDMI signal, as opposed to a letterboxed 1600x1200 VGA signal - the max this TV supports.

CALIBRATION SETTINGS

This TV has some definite problems with blues in areas of high contrast. Here are the best settings I have found, in order of their appearance in the menus:

I am the most indecisive person in the world, and within the past 6 months of browsing HDTVs and not being able to make a decision, I finally decided to jump in and buy this TV set. I've only had it for one day, but I'll continue to update this review as time goes on to make sure people get an idea of the long term aspects of this television.

First off, this TV is perfect for homes with small to medium living spaces. I have a living room that is roughly 15 by 15 feet, and this accompanies the room perfectly. Even after I set it up, I thought to myself that 42 inches would have been a bit too overpowering. Anyways, this TV puts my old 26 inch Westinghouse to shame. Although...I think almost any TV blows away Westinghouse television sets.

Anyways, right off the bat this TV is beautiful. It lacks the 120Hz processing, but in my own personal opinion, the only time 120Hz is beneficial is if you are watching sports or documentaries (Speaking of Documentaries, Planet Earth looks absolutely incredible on this TV regardless of the 120hz). All of the games I played today off of my PS3 looked much more polished and finely detailed, and Bluray (Planet Earth) was equally as incredible. I'll likely be giving some action movies a go on this TV tomorrow night, and I'll make sure to update how the TV handles fast moving scenes. However, I have a feeling that it will be great.

Before I close this, there was a review that I read which said that the television had poor viewing angles and back lighting. I just want to claim that when the sun went down, the backlighting on the TV is not nearly how the reviewer made it out to be, and the poor viewing angles are hardly poor. Do they exist? Yes, but barely. I felt like when the image became obscured due to the viewing angle, it doesn't even matter because the angle you are viewing the screen at is so awkward.

Bottom line, I am more than pleased with my purchase, and as stated before, this makes for a great small/medium sized living room TV. Unless you get a defect, you won't regret this product.

Samsung UN55B8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV

The 8000 Series of television build upon the success of Samsung's first and second generation LED HDTV models. Each using LEDs as their primary light source, the televisions all feature ultra-high contrast ratios as well as slim depths that allow for more artful designs, plus increased energy savings.

The UN55b8500 is Samsung's current flagship model and is the successor to the LN55A950.

Picture Quality
A full LED backlit LCD offering a stunning 7 million:1 contrast seperates the B8500 from other LCDs by reaching deep into pitch black, formely only possible with plasmas. Some LCDs turn off pixels to achieve inky blacks - ok for still pictures, but too slow to work with most video - basically a gimmick to inflate contrast numbers. The B8500 however, masters the darkest blacks and brightest whites to produce a bold three dimensional effect or "pop." In a dark room, the b8500 outperforms every LCD on the market, shy of the coveted pioneer plasmas. In a moderate to bright environment however, the B8500 absolutely dominates.

The highly reflective screen can be annoying for those with unfortunately placed light sources or windows without blinds. A matte screen, as on the LG 55LH90, might be a better fit for some, but a matte screen diffuses the light causing the entire screen to lose those desirable inky blacks. I can't say one is better than the other, but for a TV that can produce such dark blacks, I think the glossy screen makes more sense.

Motion handling is the best of any LCD I've seen thanks to seperate blur and judder adjustments and very few motion artifacts. Blu ray discs will exhibit perfect cinema-like panning or, if you want, a more smooth and clear pan similar to a home video. My verizon fios hd occasionally shows judder when there should a smooth flow of movement. The b8500 can help minimalize this, but it is not powerful enough to eliminate it and if set poorly, it can be made worse.

After some quick, basic calibration colors are vivid and mostly accurate. Noise and artifacts are very minimal on 720p and nonexistant on 1080p. Haloing (i.e. white text on black background cause background to lighten near text) is only visible rarely unless viewing from greater than 30° off center and increases in severity as viewing angle increases. Viewing from greater than 30° off center vertically or horizontally also causes a slight loss, contrast and color depth. Viewing from greater than 50° off causes a significant loss in contrast and color, creating a flat image and showing major haloing effects. The ideal viewing range is within 15° of center, though if centered vertically, image is barely degraded at all up to 30° off center. Ideal viewing distance is roughly 8 to 14 feet for 720p and 5 to 10 feet for 1080p, though don't take those numbers too seriously, you can obviously enjoy this tv from just about any distance. At 4 feet or less though, the 46" model is a better choice.

Ease of Use
The preset picture modes are all quite good for those who aren't picky and just want to watch their tv and the b8500 does a decent job of assigning settings automatically based on the input. Of course, high-end buyers are more likely to calibrate sources to their liking or hire a pro. The tv will remember settings for dynamic, natural, standard and movie profiles for each source. That gives you a lot more flexibility than only having one or two, but it is complicated by a confusing lockout of various settings depending on how the source is identified. You can change the name of a source and find more or less settings available for adjustment, but how this works should be clearly documented. Also, there is a little lag when navigating menus, making constant adjustments of the many, many, many settings somewhat slow and annoying. The layout of the menus themselves and the amount of adjustments available is wonderful. The remote control works using RF so you don't have to point the remote at the tv. The remote is a little bulky, but offers all the buttons you'd want for operating the television easily. The scroll wheel is inaccurate for navigating menus and only really works as a directional pad.

Design
While, I prefer the touch of grey on some other samsungs, the small blue light on the bottom of the b8500 is stylish, attractive and best of all, can be turned off. The bezel is attractive, thin, and highly glossy, but can be distracting when it picks up too many reflections. The 1.6" thick screen is amazing, but how often do you look at the side of your tv? The 61 lb. weight without stand is quite light for a 55" tv, but again how often will you move it? It does seem to use fairly little power and creates much less heat than a plasma tv. The swivel stand works well, also quite attractive with a brushed gunmetal finish.

Sound
I did not play around much with the sound as I use a 5.1 setup. I assume most people purchasing this tv will use external speakers, but the internal ones sounded just fine for what they are.

Comparisons
Competing models include the LG 55LH90/55LHZ, Toshiba 670u, Pioneer 500m/600m, Samsung 52B750/55B650/58B860, Sony xbr8 and Panasonic V10. My personal experience with display models showed the plasma screens to perform poorly in bright environments. Given the open layout and 20' ceilings of my living room, plus my wife's preference for at least dim lighting, this ruled out plasmas. The 58B860 in paricular lacked the light output to produce bright enough whites in all but a pitch black environment. The 55LH90 seemed to be the closest competitor and much cheaper, with the xbr8 and 52B750 being close behind. The LH90 however, seemed to produce too many motion artifacts, couldn't deliver quite as much "pop," along with a slew of more minor negatives.

Misc.
Upgrading from a Syntax Olevia 37 hvs (matte screen LCD), this tv has truly blown me away. While the perfect (OLED?) TV is still out of reach, the b8500 leaves little room for improvement. Input lag, a major concern for video gamers, runs under a tolerable 40ms according to my Rock Band 2 manual calibration with game mode turned on. With game mode off, the input lag increases to 140ms, which is easily noticeable. If running through a receiver, try component -> component instead of component -> hdmi for least lag. Game mode disables some processing but not the LED backlighting. The picture with game mode on even using a component connection (1080p) is incredible, though in need of some anti-aliasing on occasion. Turning off extra processing not disabled by game mode seems to have little effect on further decreasing lag, but I tend to turn them off. Auto motion is disabled in game mode, so expect some minor blur/ghosting.

The B8500 also has a ethernet port for connecting to the internet and your home network (including DLNA or Anynet). A cd included with the tv helps you play media from your PC. Widgets will automatically update to display weather, sports, news, etc., but are a little slow and less convenient than popping open a laptop. Still, it's a good idea to plug in the tv to your router at least occasionally for firmware updates.

Conclusion
For those in the market for a 55" HDTV, the b8500 is the most versatile and polished product out there. While a couple extremely high end plasmas beat out the b8500 in a dark room, no other LCD performs as well and the plasmas quickly lose out as you increase ambient light. The attractive and practical design and feature rich menus complete this incredible package. While the 55LH90 is easy to recommend to those focused on price vs. performance or in love with matte screens, the UN55B8500 is clearly a step up and would make a remarkable addition to any loving home. Prices should come down as we head into the holiday season and onto the super bowl, however these seem to be selling as fast as they arrive for now.

UPDATE: After upgrading to firmware 1008, I experienced a sort of "crop circles" phenomenon caused by a malfunction in the smart LED backlighting. If you search online, you'll find several reports as it is a very widespread problem. I have posted a picture exhibiting the problem above. It can be fixed easily by turning your tv off and on again, but may reappear occasionally. I'm guessing it will be fixed by firmware update eventually, but no word from Samsung. Regardless, I'm still very pleased with my purchase. If the crop circles weren't so easy to fix, I'd probably be fairly upset with the problem. However, it was subtle enough only to notice against a still, uniform and light background.

2nd Update: Crop circles have not returned yet. I expect them to from time to time, but it seems more of a random thing than a problem that takes time to set in. Forum posters seem to have received word from Samsung that this issue is resolved and they are starting to roll out firmware updates (for now just as usb sticks to those reporting the problem)

As for calibration, I used Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition [Blu-ray] to get my brightness, contrast and sharpness set properly. I came up with very similar numbers to what I've seen others post. Contrast 87, Brightness 47, Sharpness 30 (though i couldn't tell much difference fro 0 to 30). Setting the color space requires pro equipment, so I looked online for some numbers and they seemed to work better than default. Of course, it's a great idea to get your set calibrated by a pro because optimal color settings are not going to be the same between most b8500's. I use dynamic profile for daytime, standard for game mode, natural for sports (and some other tv shows), and movie for everything else.

I was enamored by the LCDs, especially the Samsung and was ready to get one, but decided to do some background research before decision and was disturbed by the reviews of motion blur even with 240hz and edge blurs on even the best backlit LCDs. Then read a lot of review where people complained about service and power system problems with Samsung and how they returned LCDs and exchanged for Plasma. I then tilted to plasma. I read some good reviews about Panasonic TC-P58V10 and other higher Panasonic models with THX that were reviewed in many reputable HD Home Theatre and technology sites and went to Best Buy to check it all out.

Best Buy's Magnolia Theater had the Panasonic TC-P58V10 which was a 00 more than TC-P58S1 but one look at it and we freaked out. ESPN-HD was on and the text/numbers on the basketball player's shirts were blurred with pixelated edges and the overall resolution of 1080p was worse than my 7yo DLP 1080i. We almost decided to quit all purchase.

I was then directed to the TC-P50S1, the 50" version and was amazed how clear it was. And infinitely superior to TC-P58V10 and its THX upgrade models. I was tempted to get the 65" model, but the 00 more from 58" did not add up. At 0 more for a 65" we'd have jumped at it, but I think Panasonic deliberately priced it this way - its an old pricing trick. We're very happy with the 58" model.

Like all Plasma, this one is best used in dark rooms. If you have a very sunny and bright room then stay with LCD as you'll only burn out the plasma on full power brightness and contrast. If you mostly use the tv for night time viewing then you're fine with this one in any kind of room. Don't be fooled by how good the LCDs look in the well lit showrooms, this Plasma is a real killer when you bring home. We use a dark home theater room so I actually had to reduce the brightness whether the room was dark/unlit or dim-lit. The tv comes with multiple visual settings that can all be reconfigured from default. The Cinema mode is green cast on default but can be tint adjusted, contrary to another review here on amazon that it cannot be adjusted. The Vivid and Game modes are very bright and not suitable for dark room viewing. The colors in 'Normal' has good skin tones but may seem a little brownish for some. 'Cool' is blue tinted and may suit most people who like certain crispiness and flashiness to their football HD shows. 'Warm' is too yellow/brown for any taste and is useless. There is also a Custom setting where you can create your adjustments. I sometimes have to switch between 2 modes when I flip from bluray to cable-HD. The THX optimized setting for several gray shades are too blooming and bright for most cable news and shows which does not contain the subtlety you'll find on good dvd films.

Save the money on expensive HDMI cables and get some regular ones at reasonable price. Save the money on calibration and get an old dvd such as Cars, Bug's Life, Indiana Jones or look up the THX certified list from http://thx.com/home/dvd/search.html that shows which dvd has THX Optimizer and run it. Some bluray dvd have THX Optimizers too. Look for the THX symbol on the back of the dvd case. The only thing that really needs adjustment is gray scales (that THX certified costlier models have) that'll take some time to configure. The colors are great out of the box and did not need any adjustment. Don't use the latest Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince for testing as the movie is inherently dark toned and not good for calibration - same with Dark City. Latest J.J.Abrams Star Trek is excellent for testing as it contains many dark-light compositions and fast motions along with several shades of skin colors with various color casts on skin tones as they walk around the spaceship with bright colored lights flashing on the actors, as well as sunlit skin and natural outdoor lighting scenes. Animation movies are excellent for clean crisp edges and are very useful for calibration. Also use an old b&w film like Casablanca or Maltese Falcon to test b&w settings.

One of the technical reviews had concerns about black-white management, and since we watch everything from oldest film to latest I was concerned as we have a huge collection of b&w. So, I got Buster Keaton's The General on bluray and it was absolutely stunning. Better than going to the movie theater, although it was also an excellent transfer from original negative. There is not a single problem with large white areas with small moving dark objects, such as artic scenes from Planet Earth, as some technical reviews suggested. We've seen several Film Noire and the shades of black and gray are excellent. You'll get far superior black from this Plasma than even backlit LCD or LED. Plasma is inherently superior with no motion blur and the 600hz is just tagged on for comparison to LCDs and has little meaning. You won't see any motion blur on this plasma.

I don't have anything to say about the tv audio since I use analog 7.1 from the bluray player and do not use the tv's audio. You're not buying this tv to hang above the table at the nearest McDonalds or drunken Bar, so spend 0-700 and get yourself a 5.1/7.1 HTIB - home theater in a box. Don't waste on expensive speakers unless they are all of the same brand. Do not mix and match brands as the speakers won't have same frequency response. Audiophile speakers are not appropriate for home theater and are really only for purist stereo music in a room that's also acoustically designed with purist furniture, floor, ceiling and walls. Such expensive speakers are usually just stereo in conjunction with another set of speakers for 5.1/7.1 movie use. You can get great performance from HTIBs and they have well balanced speakers. There are some advantages to getting a Panasonic HTIB as it will reduce juggling remotes and auto-control with Viera between tv & HTIB. Sony and Onkyo have good HTIBs too. I'm not fond of Samsung's dvd player due to problems I once had so I am not recommending that brand.

Don't get carried away with high end Home Theater Plasma models that are reviewed by snooty upscale review sites. I was genuinely surprised by this model. Save the extra money and do yourself a favor with several bluray dvds instead.

I did a lot of homework before making this purchase and am very happy with my choice. I purchased this tv for 98 thru Amazon from the Home Theatre Store. They upgraded me to the WD-73737 at no additional charge which was a pleasant surprise. I picked it up at the shipping terminal and it was expertly packaged and in perfect condition. Set up was as easy as it gets and the picture quality is fantastic. I have mine hooked up to a direct tv hd receiver and the sound running thru a Harmon Kardon receiver with 4 Infinity ceiling speakers and a velodyne sub. Mitsubishi has been around forever and DLP is what the movie theatres use. Blu-ray movies will blow you away! This is a lot of tv for the money. It sits on a Bush Verona model stand that for 8 was far less than the matching Mitsubishi stand and it looks great. Like everyone else says...the remote is not that great, but I use the Direct tv remote so it's no big deal. I was so impressed by this tv that I bought the Mitsubishi WD-60737 for my office.

I bought this TV when my mother said she would get me a PS3 for Christmas. Maybe I'm just over excited about it because it's a nice upgrade from a 15 inch Samsung, but I love this TV! This picture quality is great (even without HDTV) and I can't wait to play some HD games on it. I only have a couple minor complaints:
The sound quality isn't great. BUT, there is a headphone jack that I plugged my stereo speakers into, so I use those speakers when watching TV which is great. The other thing that is kind of annoying (not enough to return the TV, mind you) is the amount of time it takes to change channels. Channel surfing with the up-down buttons is fine, but when I enter channel numbers in it usually takes at least 6 or 7 seconds. But like I said, these are minor flaws that really don't bother me much.
Overall this is a great TV, especially for bedrooms (gaming).

I used to be a Sony salesperson many moons ago, and I've long had a preference for the brand. They last forever, and usually have the latest technology wrapped up. Unfortunately, Sony consistently commands a higher price, and I've done a lot of experimenting with others, usually with good results.

I wasn't even shopping for a TV when I found a reference to the special deal I got on a Black Friday website (4 days before black friday). I got this set, plus the BDP-460N Blu-Ray with Netflix, for 3.00 delivered. Don't ask me how. It wasn't advertised, but I got lucky and found a brief reference to it. A few clicks later, and I'm loving it.

Here's the good. I bought all Sony (including a Surround setup from Wal-Mart), and it all hooked up easy. Firmware downloads were automatic (another good reason for having the net-enabled devices). Initial set-up was a breeze, as the TV knew about the other components as soon as I powered up. Fantastic picture, stunning interface, Sony class all the way.

The set hasn't been off since we set it up yesterday. If we aren't watching, we are listening to internet radio (also through the Blu-Ray). BTW, the Netflix streaming now works flawlessly. But does Amazon really think I'm going to pay .99 to watch Cops re-runs?

Here's the bad: I spend 00k plus buying Sony all the way. The only thing I couldn't buy as a Sony Brand was my satellite receiver. I was amazed to realize that none of the supplied remotes with the Sony product was a "universal" remote. The Bravia interface makes it easy to get by on just one of the included remotes (3 of them), but I can't change the #$#@% channels on the satellite without picking up a separate remote. So I've just finished programming a Logitech Harmony 880 to do it all in one place. This is really a pitiful oversight, as I can buy a remote for that will do most of what I want, but I paid for premium function. Now on the Logitech, I will be giving up much of the advantage I gained by buying Sony exclusive.

But I am thrilled. Great stuff Sony, but come up with a remote that can handle cable boxes and satellite, and you'll find that you can sell a lot more package deals.

As a future college student, I have looked for, researched, and tried out many small HDTV's to use as a computer monitor/HDTV for my dorm room. The employees at Best Buy stated that if a TV wasn't over 46 inches big, you couldn't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. However, he didn't know what he was saying. At relatively far distances (i.e. normal watching distance for most TV's) the difference between 1080p and 720p is small to none. However, from a short distance (like 4 feet for a 42 inch, or 1.5 feet for a 24 inch) you can easily tell the difference in resolution. This is where this T.V. comes in. As a computer monitor, I will be close up to the screen, reading tiny text like the text in this review! Now that the main issue has been sorted out, it's onto the main review:

Contrast-5000:1 may seem like a big number, but that is only dynamic. Although I couldn't find the static/typical contrast, it is probably around 900-1000. However, since this set has a relatively low brightness (300 cd/m2), blacks looked blacker than normal, which is a good thing.

Resolution- 1080p...enough said!

Motion- 5 ms means that button presses on any device (like a keyboard or game console) happen with only an unnoticable .05 second delay, which is lightning fast. However, since there is no 120Hz, there will be noticeable motion blur on extremely fast action scenes. This tv is relatively small, so motion blur won't be a big problem for normal watching and gaming.

Feature Set/Presentation- since this is an ECO HDTV, it uses far less power than previous models, if your into the whole energy saving thing. SRS TruSurround is always a good thing for making movies and other sounds "pop" but when that program is run through 3 Watt speakers, you can't expect much. The 3D comb filter, now standard with many HDTV's, helped to put out a wide color scheme; at least that's what my friends said they saw, I'm colorblind, so color gamut specs really don't apply to me. The white/black look touches off my 360, but it can only match with so many things.

Overall Value- for a little over 0, you get full 1080p, a relatively "large-small-screen" great for a computer monitor, and the confidence that you got another good HDTV from Vizio.

I bought this to replace one of the Samsung 40"ers I won playing poker (long story). I wanted BIGGER than the 40 and caught this at a good price early xmas eve, so most of my comparison is to the Samsung it replaced. The Good: Bigger is better, much deeper and richer blacks, does not blur with speed ie football game etc, better viewing angle, better anti glare, auto channel scan picks up much more channels and much faster, auto channel scan auto tunes both cable, digital and analog tv signals and locked them in with 1 sweep, deeper and more detailed menu and options. Lots of manual pic size adjustments, 4 hdmi inputs, remote passthru
The Bad (or not so good): Colors are not as bright or sharp. Colors are not as 'REAL' ie skin tone etc. Sound system mediocre even with SRS wow, eq and enhancements (I use a very hi end audio system for movies anyway) remote kinda clutery and not friendly and range not good, deep menu and manual also clutery and somewhat unfriendly, fixed stand does not swival, only 1 cable/antenna input, so it is not possible to hookup both a Cable line and an (hdtv) antenna, 1 side input port, but no front port. Lots of manual size and pic adjustments, but the Samsung had auto settings for most and did it very well.. (who wants to go through lots of menu stuff when going from a widescreen dvd to a regulaor dvd) Has a "Game Mode" but it really sucks compared to the Samsung's.
Overall I am happy and satisfied with my purchase. The picture comparison to my old Samsung is a wash. Blacks better on Toshiba, Colors better on Samsung, but Toshiba doesn't blur. Features about the same, but Toshiba had more manual adj and samsung more automatic. Last, this TV looks good, but was not the best in the store. The store had approx 40 tv's going all same channel and all of the 120hz pics where better, but some of the normal Samsung and Sony pics where somewhat better. All the other cheaper or 'off' brands like LG Vizio etc clearly had a much worse pic. I purchased this because the pic was certainly good to very good and the price was right 00 + tax.

I have looked at so many LCD & DLP televisions over the last year that my brain was becoming scrambled. I finally was ready to replace my 10 year old Hitachi 53" in the huge monster black cabinet and wanted to make sure that that I was making the right choice of which new HD to buy. All the store employees knew me by name because I had been in so many times looking. I had pretty much settled on a Samsung 55" and had even considered a 73" DLP because of the bang for the buck in size. I was in Fry's and sales rep came up to me and said I have the deal for you. He told me about the LG55LH90 with 240Hz and the high rating it had received on C-NET. He said they only had one in stock in the back room and that The LG rep had just been there and they had been authorized to offer it at a promo price of 99.00 plus a free LG Blu-ray player. I was a little leary because I was not that familiar with LG brand. I asked if I could think about it and come back next day and he said that price was a one time promo and he guaranteed I would love the TV. Boy was he right! This TV has the most awesome picture I have ever seen. I watch the same old TV shows that I have been watching for years and never knew how they should really look in HD. It's like looking out a window, and sports, you feel as though you can reach out and touch the grass blades on the football field. Movies with the THX are unreal. As for the lip-sync issues I've read about I have none. I went online and bought Monster M1000 HDMI cables for .00 each instead of the 9.00 you pay in stores and have hooked up to Time Warner HD-DVR box and sound is perfect. So I guess cables do make a difference. I am very,very happy I went with this TV and especially at the price I paid as the prices now are anywhere from 00 to 00. But at any price it out performs any other TV I have seen and the matte screen eliminates most all glare in a bright room. If your looking for a great LED that will not be outdated in 6 months you will not be unhappy with this one.

This is my first HDTV and I am very pleased with it. The picture quality is outstanding. Here are some of my comments, in no particular order....

First, as I write this (9/3/2008) Amazon's description of the item is incorrect. They list it as a 720p receiver. It is actually 1080i. Verified at Hitachi's web site, where you can download a PDF specification sheet, also the owner's manual states it is 1080i.

The owner's manual leaves a lot to be desired. Descriptions of some of the features ("E-Save" for example) are inadequately covered, or not at all.

There is only one S-Video input, and that is on the side of the set, not the back.

The component video inputs on the back will also accept composite video... a GOOD thing!

You can rename each input source from predefined choices, like PVR, DVD, etc. It would be nice to be able to create your own names (like "TiVo" for example).

Setup was very easy. I connected the set to cable, and the built-in tuner found all the analog and digital channels available, and quite a few that had no programming on them (requiring a few minutes of editing of the channel list). Nitpick: you cannot add channels to the channel list manually. You must let the set scan for channels, then mark the ones you want to skip over.

The set's tuner is NOT CableCARD equipped.

Overall, I would recommend this set highly. It has a lot of inputs, including 3 HDMI inputs, a great tuner, lots of features and amazing picture quality.

I would normally take one star off in rating this TV, as I don't find the sound to be particularly outstanding. It's not bad, just not superior. We'll be attaching a separate audio device to improve this.

However, any stars I would take off I have to give back because this is a Technical Support Department that really lives up to its name! I've called three times (twice the problem turned out to be with my cable provider; once the manual was unclear) and each time I was connected to a knowledgeable person with minimal to no wait time. The number is listed in big letters on the front page of the manual -- they don't try to make it hard for you to find them. I've never heard of Funai Electric (the maker of Sylvania TVs) before, but I'm going to be keeping my eyes open for other products they make.

And as another reviewer noted, the closed captioning menu offers a lot of choices -- you can change text size, text color, border, background color, etc.

I would definitely buy this TV again.

I have had this Toshiba 55SV670U for about one week. My decesion to pick this set over the Samsung 7100, Samsung 950, Sony XBR8 and LGH90 did not come without a carefull examination of the picture quality on all the sets. (I eliminated plasmas as they appeared rather dim to me.)

My desire was high brightness, sharpness and high contrast ratios. The weight and thickness was not that important as I only planned on moving this set once or twice. I will be looking at the picture more often than looking at the side view.

This model Toshiba is now using a similiar front layer as Samsungs and it has improved the contrast ratio signifiantly. The blacks are much darker using this front material. I know it will reflect lights from behind me, but I'll block the window with a shade.... I would rather have that problem 10 % of the time than have the matte finish distort the picture 100 % of the time.

The only way to improve contrast ratio is to locally dim. All the above do locally dim except the Samsung 7100. I questioned how the Samsung 7100 could have a single backlight and be able to make selected areas blacker. I found this Samsung set to have a slight blue hue over the whole picture. However, the Samsung 7100 would have been my second choice.

The Sony XBR8 and the Samsung 950 had the best pictures - just too expensive for the RGB backlighting and Just not worth
$ 1500 to $ 2000 more to me.

The Toshiba 55SV670U gave me the local dimming, an anti-reflective coated contrast window, 120 HZ scan rate and a bright long lasting LED display. I am completelty satisfied with this set.... and with and with its much lower selling price.

Drop in Mr and Mrs Smith in Blu Ray and you will ever regret purchasing this Toshiba
