I have had the Panasonic TH-50PZ850U for about 6 months. I spent about 00 with extended warranty. So far, I have been impressed. The resolution was top notch. I used "Finding Nemo" to test the colors. On the vivid setting it was fantastic... Probably a bit exaggerated. The Studio ref mode offers more accurate colors. The THX settings on the 800U may be more accurate, but I would love to have a little bit of oomph to the colors even if it is not accurate. Don't we all like "exaggerated fake ones"!
Clearly this TV is a winner. It comes close to the blacks in a pioneer and the THX accuracy of the 800U. It matches the Brilliant colors of a Samsung or probably even better. It has improved energy savings, better anti glare screen, wider viewing angle, and a web interface via viera cast. I am going to set up the viera cast soon. I cannot find another TV that packs more.
The speakers are great. I moved to a smaller home and had to keep the surround speakers in storage, but I don't feel the need for them.
It is easy to assemble and set up. You won't need a professional. I bought an upconverting DVD player to watch all my old DVDs and the difference is obvious. I am yet to watch Blu-ray movies. I am waiting for a good blu ray player that can also play movies stored on an external hard drive through a USB connection.
Like others have mentioned, the only bug - if a player is connected through a HDMI port it will switch out another that is connected via component cables.

The picture and the sound are so good I'll give it 5 stars. Once you watch a Blu Ray movie on this TV everything else is going to look inferior - I've never seen a better TV on the market, though I guess they've started making slimmer, LED TVs for like a million dollars.

We decided to go HD after a long time of waiting. We, for a very long time, used a Toshiba Rear-projection TV at 50" in our living room. We decided that we would need a TV large enough to take the place of that TV and to make it not look so small. DLP is the right choice for this since you can get a much larger screen size at a lower cost than LCD or Plasma. Since we had good luck with our other rear-projection, we figured that we would have good luck with this TV. Having it for a month now, there have been no issues and our view experience is great. The matted screen makes glares much less harsh (our old TV had a glossy screen). The wight of this TV is extremely light for its size, our friend has a 42" LCD which is much heavier than this. As long as you're planning to put the TV on a stand, the lack of it being a flat panel shouldn't be a big deal. 1080p content through our Xbox 360 is very detailed and sharp and the TV never lags behind nor have I seen any "rainbow effect" from this TV during normal viewing. The only con with this TV is the build in speakers to the TV are very tinny and all around subpar. Although if you use this TV hooked up to an AV receiver you will have no issues, you buy a TV for the picture, not the sound. All around I am very happy we bought this TV. I've had nothing but good luck with Mitsubishi, in fact, we still own an old Mitsubishi console color TV from the early 80s that works perfectly. You should have no regrets in buying this DLP HDTV.

This tv has the best picture on any hdtv I have ever seen other than a pioneer kuro elite. However my plasma tv had a gap of a fourth of inch where there was no plasma gas. It was a faulty one. Perhaps it had been laid down on it's side? Anyways I returned it, but later decided to try this model again. And this one was perfect. Many people are saying that this is the same as g10 in quality , they are not correct , the v10 has a much better picture and processor. The colors are crisper and the fans are much more quiet than on a g10. The g10's fans are barely noticable but I couldn't even hear them on this model. The v10 also does 96hz which allows you to play blu rays at proper 24p speed. The g10 will only do it at 60hz and 48hz which isn't as smooth for blu ray playing. The v10 also looks better although I am not a fan of the one plane of glass in the front; it is still a sharp set and this tv is has the best picture for a newer Tv, other than the pioneer elit series which is now extinct. this is surely a better tv by far than the g10. the next model up from this one seemed very similiar but much more expensive than this one. the z1, It is also silver in color (the g10 and v10 are black) so for that reason alone, I might have skipped it. I don't recommend using a plasma tv for video game usage at all. I use a lcd for that purpose and leave movies and tv usage for this exceptional tv.

After about a year and a half of research I bought this TV off of Amazon. I had seen it in a store before I purchased it, and in the store it blew the other TVs around it away.

Having used this TV for about 2 weeks, I can safely say that it has in many ways lived up to my expectation. The color is true to life, the contrast excellent. Motion is seemless, and watching blue-ray movies on the TV is exquisite, and this is with out of the box settings! I have also played many hours of video games on this TV, and the image is mind blowing. My wife was astounded the first time I booted up our Xbox 360, saying "I'll never play video games on your computer again!" - Not sure if I am happy or sad about that one... Even for action games and FPS's this TV has had seemless visuals with no bluring, slowdown, or anything else I've heard negative about LCD/LED TV's. Many people complain that LEDs tend to have a washed out white "halo" around the outer rim of their TV, due to the way that the LED "side-lights" the display (in contrast to the "back-light" of an LCD TV. I use this TV in my basement with no other lighting, this is the worst possible scenario for these issues, and I almost never notice a problem. The only time I do notice this is if the lights are off and the screen is pure black (credits to a movie). Otherwise I can't say I notice this AT ALL.

My complaints about the devices are these:

1) It isn't true 120hz
2) Isn't best bang for the buck

This TV claims to be 120hz, but is really 60hz with "auto-motion plus," a feature that digitally inserts extra frames based on some sort of average of the current and next frame. This creates an artificial 120hz. I've found this system to be great for high quality images, as it gives me a fluid and realistic feel, which is almost creepy. On the other hand, this technology doesn't always do the images favors, and I've found when this technology is applied to standard definition video the effect is less then desirable. It is almost as if the feature accents problems with the image, making poor lighting and non-fluid movement obvious. That said, you can turn the feature off, but its burried in a complex menu system, and is a pain to toggle. I bought this TV thinking it was true 120hz, but I was wrong. Still, even with true-motion turned off action scenes are without skip, and look great.

My last and final complaint is that for the price this TV is quite as nice as I would have hoped. If it were a true 120hz this TV would be a 5 star purchase, but what you are really paying for is the LED factor, and not for the other features. All in all the interface, remote, and construction is top notch. Performance is admirable, but the TV is expensive, and I've seen LCD tvs for hundreds less that can compete with this TV in most departments.

A definite buy if you must have an LED TV. If you can go with LCD I'd consider buying something else.

Since I have owned this TV for a few months now, I thought it would be helpful to share a few tips and tricks I have learned:

PROBLEM: INCOMPATIBLE AUDIO SIGNAL

All my A/V devices (360, PS3, Wii, Samsung DTB-H260F) were connected to my Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver with HDMI, which was set to output to my Sharp Aquos LC-52E77U. And, although the receiver was set to "Audio TV Out" off (and even with it on), the TV kept popping up this error:

"Incompatible audio signal has been received, please check the output signal."

It only pops up for a few seconds, and only when I would switch devices or resolution or whatever. Still, pretty annoying. Connecting the devices directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error - the only time it didn't happen is when there was 2ch 44.1/48Khz PCM involved.

Unfortunately, unlike every other TV I have ever owned, the Sharp doesn't have a menu option to disable audio. Muting didn't help, either.

The solution? Set the audio volume to 0. No more error!


PROBLEM: NO DEVICE DETECTED (DVI -> HDMI)

When I first got this TV, I plugged in my Mac Mini, using a DVI -> HDMI cable. After using it for a bit, the TV would stop recognizing that the Mac Mini was connected. It turns out that, whenever the Mac Mini would be rebooted or would go to sleep, the Sharp would refuse to recognize that it was connected anymore.

The solution? Physically unplugging and plugging in the TV (not just pressing the power button), and disabling sleep on the Mac. I still have to do this unplugging dance occasionally - like for system updates - but not as often as when sleep was enabled. I guess that's the price you pay for a beautiful 1080p HDMI signal, as opposed to a letterboxed 1600x1200 VGA signal - the max this TV supports.


CALIBRATION SETTINGS

This TV has some definite problems with blues in areas of high contrast. Here are the best settings I have found, in order of their appearance in the menus:

Backlight: +6 (you can adjust up or down a smidge if need be)

I am the most indecisive person in the world, and within the past 6 months of browsing HDTVs and not being able to make a decision, I finally decided to jump in and buy this TV set. I've only had it for one day, but I'll continue to update this review as time goes on to make sure people get an idea of the long term aspects of this television.

First off, this TV is perfect for homes with small to medium living spaces. I have a living room that is roughly 15 by 15 feet, and this accompanies the room perfectly. Even after I set it up, I thought to myself that 42 inches would have been a bit too overpowering. Anyways, this TV puts my old 26 inch Westinghouse to shame. Although...I think almost any TV blows away Westinghouse television sets.

Anyways, right off the bat this TV is beautiful. It lacks the 120Hz processing, but in my own personal opinion, the only time 120Hz is beneficial is if you are watching sports or documentaries (Speaking of Documentaries, Planet Earth looks absolutely incredible on this TV regardless of the 120hz). All of the games I played today off of my PS3 looked much more polished and finely detailed, and Bluray (Planet Earth) was equally as incredible. I'll likely be giving some action movies a go on this TV tomorrow night, and I'll make sure to update how the TV handles fast moving scenes. However, I have a feeling that it will be great.

Before I close this, there was a review that I read which said that the television had poor viewing angles and back lighting. I just want to claim that when the sun went down, the backlighting on the TV is not nearly how the reviewer made it out to be, and the poor viewing angles are hardly poor. Do they exist? Yes, but barely. I felt like when the image became obscured due to the viewing angle, it doesn't even matter because the angle you are viewing the screen at is so awkward.

Bottom line, I am more than pleased with my purchase, and as stated before, this makes for a great small/medium sized living room TV. Unless you get a defect, you won't regret this product.

Samsung UN55B8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV

The 8000 Series of television build upon the success of Samsung's first and second generation LED HDTV models. Each using LEDs as their primary light source, the televisions all feature ultra-high contrast ratios as well as slim depths that allow for more artful designs, plus increased energy savings.

The UN55b8500 is Samsung's current flagship model and is the successor to the LN55A950.

Picture Quality
A full LED backlit LCD offering a stunning 7 million:1 contrast seperates the B8500 from other LCDs by reaching deep into pitch black, formely only possible with plasmas. Some LCDs turn off pixels to achieve inky blacks - ok for still pictures, but too slow to work with most video - basically a gimmick to inflate contrast numbers. The B8500 however, masters the darkest blacks and brightest whites to produce a bold three dimensional effect or "pop." In a dark room, the b8500 outperforms every LCD on the market, shy of the coveted pioneer plasmas. In a moderate to bright environment however, the B8500 absolutely dominates.

The highly reflective screen can be annoying for those with unfortunately placed light sources or windows without blinds. A matte screen, as on the LG 55LH90, might be a better fit for some, but a matte screen diffuses the light causing the entire screen to lose those desirable inky blacks. I can't say one is better than the other, but for a TV that can produce such dark blacks, I think the glossy screen makes more sense.

Motion handling is the best of any LCD I've seen thanks to seperate blur and judder adjustments and very few motion artifacts. Blu ray discs will exhibit perfect cinema-like panning or, if you want, a more smooth and clear pan similar to a home video. My verizon fios hd occasionally shows judder when there should a smooth flow of movement. The b8500 can help minimalize this, but it is not powerful enough to eliminate it and if set poorly, it can be made worse.

After some quick, basic calibration colors are vivid and mostly accurate. Noise and artifacts are very minimal on 720p and nonexistant on 1080p. Haloing (i.e. white text on black background cause background to lighten near text) is only visible rarely unless viewing from greater than 30° off center and increases in severity as viewing angle increases. Viewing from greater than 30° off center vertically or horizontally also causes a slight loss, contrast and color depth. Viewing from greater than 50° off causes a significant loss in contrast and color, creating a flat image and showing major haloing effects. The ideal viewing range is within 15° of center, though if centered vertically, image is barely degraded at all up to 30° off center. Ideal viewing distance is roughly 8 to 14 feet for 720p and 5 to 10 feet for 1080p, though don't take those numbers too seriously, you can obviously enjoy this tv from just about any distance. At 4 feet or less though, the 46" model is a better choice.

Ease of Use
The preset picture modes are all quite good for those who aren't picky and just want to watch their tv and the b8500 does a decent job of assigning settings automatically based on the input. Of course, high-end buyers are more likely to calibrate sources to their liking or hire a pro. The tv will remember settings for dynamic, natural, standard and movie profiles for each source. That gives you a lot more flexibility than only having one or two, but it is complicated by a confusing lockout of various settings depending on how the source is identified. You can change the name of a source and find more or less settings available for adjustment, but how this works should be clearly documented. Also, there is a little lag when navigating menus, making constant adjustments of the many, many, many settings somewhat slow and annoying. The layout of the menus themselves and the amount of adjustments available is wonderful. The remote control works using RF so you don't have to point the remote at the tv. The remote is a little bulky, but offers all the buttons you'd want for operating the television easily. The scroll wheel is inaccurate for navigating menus and only really works as a directional pad.

Design
While, I prefer the touch of grey on some other samsungs, the small blue light on the bottom of the b8500 is stylish, attractive and best of all, can be turned off. The bezel is attractive, thin, and highly glossy, but can be distracting when it picks up too many reflections. The 1.6" thick screen is amazing, but how often do you look at the side of your tv? The 61 lb. weight without stand is quite light for a 55" tv, but again how often will you move it? It does seem to use fairly little power and creates much less heat than a plasma tv. The swivel stand works well, also quite attractive with a brushed gunmetal finish.

Sound
I did not play around much with the sound as I use a 5.1 setup. I assume most people purchasing this tv will use external speakers, but the internal ones sounded just fine for what they are.

Comparisons
Competing models include the LG 55LH90/55LHZ, Toshiba 670u, Pioneer 500m/600m, Samsung 52B750/55B650/58B860, Sony xbr8 and Panasonic V10. My personal experience with display models showed the plasma screens to perform poorly in bright environments. Given the open layout and 20' ceilings of my living room, plus my wife's preference for at least dim lighting, this ruled out plasmas. The 58B860 in paricular lacked the light output to produce bright enough whites in all but a pitch black environment. The 55LH90 seemed to be the closest competitor and much cheaper, with the xbr8 and 52B750 being close behind. The LH90 however, seemed to produce too many motion artifacts, couldn't deliver quite as much "pop," along with a slew of more minor negatives.

Misc.
Upgrading from a Syntax Olevia 37 hvs (matte screen LCD), this tv has truly blown me away. While the perfect (OLED?) TV is still out of reach, the b8500 leaves little room for improvement. Input lag, a major concern for video gamers, runs under a tolerable 40ms according to my Rock Band 2 manual calibration with game mode turned on. With game mode off, the input lag increases to 140ms, which is easily noticeable. If running through a receiver, try component -> component instead of component -> hdmi for least lag. Game mode disables some processing but not the LED backlighting. The picture with game mode on even using a component connection (1080p) is incredible, though in need of some anti-aliasing on occasion. Turning off extra processing not disabled by game mode seems to have little effect on further decreasing lag, but I tend to turn them off. Auto motion is disabled in game mode, so expect some minor blur/ghosting.

The B8500 also has a ethernet port for connecting to the internet and your home network (including DLNA or Anynet). A cd included with the tv helps you play media from your PC. Widgets will automatically update to display weather, sports, news, etc., but are a little slow and less convenient than popping open a laptop. Still, it's a good idea to plug in the tv to your router at least occasionally for firmware updates.

Conclusion
For those in the market for a 55" HDTV, the b8500 is the most versatile and polished product out there. While a couple extremely high end plasmas beat out the b8500 in a dark room, no other LCD performs as well and the plasmas quickly lose out as you increase ambient light. The attractive and practical design and feature rich menus complete this incredible package. While the 55LH90 is easy to recommend to those focused on price vs. performance or in love with matte screens, the UN55B8500 is clearly a step up and would make a remarkable addition to any loving home. Prices should come down as we head into the holiday season and onto the super bowl, however these seem to be selling as fast as they arrive for now.


UPDATE: After upgrading to firmware 1008, I experienced a sort of "crop circles" phenomenon caused by a malfunction in the smart LED backlighting. If you search online, you'll find several reports as it is a very widespread problem. I have posted a picture exhibiting the problem above. It can be fixed easily by turning your tv off and on again, but may reappear occasionally. I'm guessing it will be fixed by firmware update eventually, but no word from Samsung. Regardless, I'm still very pleased with my purchase. If the crop circles weren't so easy to fix, I'd probably be fairly upset with the problem. However, it was subtle enough only to notice against a still, uniform and light background.

2nd Update: Crop circles have not returned yet. I expect them to from time to time, but it seems more of a random thing than a problem that takes time to set in. Forum posters seem to have received word from Samsung that this issue is resolved and they are starting to roll out firmware updates (for now just as usb sticks to those reporting the problem)

As for calibration, I used Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition [Blu-ray] to get my brightness, contrast and sharpness set properly. I came up with very similar numbers to what I've seen others post. Contrast 87, Brightness 47, Sharpness 30 (though i couldn't tell much difference fro 0 to 30). Setting the color space requires pro equipment, so I looked online for some numbers and they seemed to work better than default. Of course, it's a great idea to get your set calibrated by a pro because optimal color settings are not going to be the same between most b8500's. I use dynamic profile for daytime, standard for game mode, natural for sports (and some other tv shows), and movie for everything else.

I was enamored by the LCDs, especially the Samsung and was ready to get one, but decided to do some background research before decision and was disturbed by the reviews of motion blur even with 240hz and edge blurs on even the best backlit LCDs. Then read a lot of review where people complained about service and power system problems with Samsung and how they returned LCDs and exchanged for Plasma. I then tilted to plasma. I read some good reviews about Panasonic TC-P58V10 and other higher Panasonic models with THX that were reviewed in many reputable HD Home Theatre and technology sites and went to Best Buy to check it all out.

Best Buy's Magnolia Theater had the Panasonic TC-P58V10 which was a 00 more than TC-P58S1 but one look at it and we freaked out. ESPN-HD was on and the text/numbers on the basketball player's shirts were blurred with pixelated edges and the overall resolution of 1080p was worse than my 7yo DLP 1080i. We almost decided to quit all purchase.

I was then directed to the TC-P50S1, the 50" version and was amazed how clear it was. And infinitely superior to TC-P58V10 and its THX upgrade models. I was tempted to get the 65" model, but the 00 more from 58" did not add up. At 0 more for a 65" we'd have jumped at it, but I think Panasonic deliberately priced it this way - its an old pricing trick. We're very happy with the 58" model.

Like all Plasma, this one is best used in dark rooms. If you have a very sunny and bright room then stay with LCD as you'll only burn out the plasma on full power brightness and contrast. If you mostly use the tv for night time viewing then you're fine with this one in any kind of room. Don't be fooled by how good the LCDs look in the well lit showrooms, this Plasma is a real killer when you bring home. We use a dark home theater room so I actually had to reduce the brightness whether the room was dark/unlit or dim-lit. The tv comes with multiple visual settings that can all be reconfigured from default. The Cinema mode is green cast on default but can be tint adjusted, contrary to another review here on amazon that it cannot be adjusted. The Vivid and Game modes are very bright and not suitable for dark room viewing. The colors in 'Normal' has good skin tones but may seem a little brownish for some. 'Cool' is blue tinted and may suit most people who like certain crispiness and flashiness to their football HD shows. 'Warm' is too yellow/brown for any taste and is useless. There is also a Custom setting where you can create your adjustments. I sometimes have to switch between 2 modes when I flip from bluray to cable-HD. The THX optimized setting for several gray shades are too blooming and bright for most cable news and shows which does not contain the subtlety you'll find on good dvd films.

Save the money on expensive HDMI cables and get some regular ones at reasonable price. Save the money on calibration and get an old dvd such as Cars, Bug's Life, Indiana Jones or look up the THX certified list from http://thx.com/home/dvd/search.html that shows which dvd has THX Optimizer and run it. Some bluray dvd have THX Optimizers too. Look for the THX symbol on the back of the dvd case. The only thing that really needs adjustment is gray scales (that THX certified costlier models have) that'll take some time to configure. The colors are great out of the box and did not need any adjustment. Don't use the latest Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince for testing as the movie is inherently dark toned and not good for calibration - same with Dark City. Latest J.J.Abrams Star Trek is excellent for testing as it contains many dark-light compositions and fast motions along with several shades of skin colors with various color casts on skin tones as they walk around the spaceship with bright colored lights flashing on the actors, as well as sunlit skin and natural outdoor lighting scenes. Animation movies are excellent for clean crisp edges and are very useful for calibration. Also use an old b&w film like Casablanca or Maltese Falcon to test b&w settings.

One of the technical reviews had concerns about black-white management, and since we watch everything from oldest film to latest I was concerned as we have a huge collection of b&w. So, I got Buster Keaton's The General on bluray and it was absolutely stunning. Better than going to the movie theater, although it was also an excellent transfer from original negative. There is not a single problem with large white areas with small moving dark objects, such as artic scenes from Planet Earth, as some technical reviews suggested. We've seen several Film Noire and the shades of black and gray are excellent. You'll get far superior black from this Plasma than even backlit LCD or LED. Plasma is inherently superior with no motion blur and the 600hz is just tagged on for comparison to LCDs and has little meaning. You won't see any motion blur on this plasma.

I don't have anything to say about the tv audio since I use analog 7.1 from the bluray player and do not use the tv's audio. You're not buying this tv to hang above the table at the nearest McDonalds or drunken Bar, so spend 0-700 and get yourself a 5.1/7.1 HTIB - home theater in a box. Don't waste on expensive speakers unless they are all of the same brand. Do not mix and match brands as the speakers won't have same frequency response. Audiophile speakers are not appropriate for home theater and are really only for purist stereo music in a room that's also acoustically designed with purist furniture, floor, ceiling and walls. Such expensive speakers are usually just stereo in conjunction with another set of speakers for 5.1/7.1 movie use. You can get great performance from HTIBs and they have well balanced speakers. There are some advantages to getting a Panasonic HTIB as it will reduce juggling remotes and auto-control with Viera between tv & HTIB. Sony and Onkyo have good HTIBs too. I'm not fond of Samsung's dvd player due to problems I once had so I am not recommending that brand.

Don't get carried away with high end Home Theater Plasma models that are reviewed by snooty upscale review sites. I was genuinely surprised by this model. Save the extra money and do yourself a favor with several bluray dvds instead.

I did a lot of homework before making this purchase and am very happy with my choice. I purchased this tv for 98 thru Amazon from the Home Theatre Store. They upgraded me to the WD-73737 at no additional charge which was a pleasant surprise. I picked it up at the shipping terminal and it was expertly packaged and in perfect condition. Set up was as easy as it gets and the picture quality is fantastic. I have mine hooked up to a direct tv hd receiver and the sound running thru a Harmon Kardon receiver with 4 Infinity ceiling speakers and a velodyne sub. Mitsubishi has been around forever and DLP is what the movie theatres use. Blu-ray movies will blow you away! This is a lot of tv for the money. It sits on a Bush Verona model stand that for 8 was far less than the matching Mitsubishi stand and it looks great. Like everyone else says...the remote is not that great, but I use the Direct tv remote so it's no big deal. I was so impressed by this tv that I bought the Mitsubishi WD-60737 for my office.

I bought this TV when my mother said she would get me a PS3 for Christmas. Maybe I'm just over excited about it because it's a nice upgrade from a 15 inch Samsung, but I love this TV! This picture quality is great (even without HDTV) and I can't wait to play some HD games on it. I only have a couple minor complaints:
The sound quality isn't great. BUT, there is a headphone jack that I plugged my stereo speakers into, so I use those speakers when watching TV which is great. The other thing that is kind of annoying (not enough to return the TV, mind you) is the amount of time it takes to change channels. Channel surfing with the up-down buttons is fine, but when I enter channel numbers in it usually takes at least 6 or 7 seconds. But like I said, these are minor flaws that really don't bother me much.
Overall this is a great TV, especially for bedrooms (gaming).
